Save and Profit from Nutrient Planning

NVZ Calculations and Nutrient Planning Requirements

FWAG Invites Farmers to Meetings & Workshops to Aid NVZ Compliance

The Environment Agency is now commencing Cross Compliance Inspections for 2009. The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group is inviting farmers from across the Yorkshire region to attend a series of Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) introductory meetings and practical workshops in June to ensure that they are meeting new regulations and to reduce the risk of non-compliance and a potential reduction of their Single Farm Payment.

The meetings will give an overview of the new rules and provide answers to any questions. The workshops will enable farmers to complete the paperwork that is required under the new NVZ legislation, with specific events for livestock farmers with slurry storage issues.  The events are funded by the Environment Agency who is urging farmers to attend so that they do not fall foul of the regulations.  Farmers who register for the workshops will:

Gain a practical understanding of the new NVZ regulations and timescales.
Work through N Planning and N Max calculations
Learn about how nutrient management planning can help them to save and profit
Compare different field record systems and choose the best one for their farm
Hear about potential grant aid and further help that is available
Complete Livestock Manure N Farm Limits and Slurry Storage Calculations
Consider and discuss slurry storage and look at suitable options available for their farm

The workshops are completely free and will be delivered by FACTS qualified FWAG advisers in partnership with Environment Agency officers.  Farmers will be asked to bring along the necessary paperwork so that they are in a position to complete the required calculations on the day.

Karen Stanley, FWAG Farm Conservation Adviser with Yorkshire FWAG commented:

‘Farmers in existing NVZs in Yorkshire should by now have completed their N planning, N Max Limits, Livestock Manure N Farm Limit and Storage calculations.  By attending these workshops, farmers can sort out the information required in 3 hours with qualified staff with years of practical on-farm experience on hand to help them through the process.'

Dates for the meetings and workshops are attached.  More events will be provided in the autumn including workshops and drop-in clinics.
