The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), the leading provider of independent environmental advice to farmers, has welcomed the Government's new Food Strategy 2030 as a "significant milestone" following its launch at the Oxford Farming Conference.
The Food Strategy 2030, unveiled by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recognises the vital contribution that agriculture and food production makes to the wellbeing of the UK. In particular, it highlights the importance of sustainable food production.
Andy Ormiston, FWAG's Managing Director stated: "The launch of the new Food Strategy 2030, which stresses the need to produce more and impact less, is a significant milestone towards securing a viable future for British agriculture.
"FWAG is delighted that the Secretary of State has highlighted the fundamental importance of food security to the UK".
The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) gives advice to over 6,000 farmers each year to help them to produce more food with less impact on the environment. Its network of 100 Farm Conservation Advisers organise nearly 500 events each year where farmers can learn about wildlife habitat management, better use of fertilisers and other chemicals and climate change solutions for their farms. For over forty years, FWAG has championed the cause of sustainable food production. As a farmer-led organisation, FWAG has helped farmers to produce food commercially hand-in-hand with environmental enhancement and wildlife conservation on their farms.
Andy Ormiston added "As the leading provider of environmental advice to farmers, FWAG welcomes the emphasis on sustainable production that recognises that commercial agriculture must go hand-in-hand with a healthy farmland environment.
"FWAG looks forward to the opportunity of working with Defra and its Agencies to help farmers and the agricultural industry to take action in order to meet the challenge set down in the Food Strategy 2030".
