Trees form an important and popular part of our landscape as well as providing a habitat for many wildlife species. Many bird species need trees as song posts and all members of the tit family need mature trees to provide them with insects on which to feed. Once a tree becomes veteran it is an ideal habitat for many insects and is hence beneficial to insect-eating birds. Hollows and holes provide nesting and roosting sites for birds, bats and other small mammals.
For further information on how to manage trees for the benefit wildlife please download one of our leaflets below. You can also visit the website British Trees, which provides a wealth of information about our native trees and also has an on-line shop. The website is run by the Woodland Trust, a charity dedicated to the protection of our native woodland.
